The question on many of our minds when purchasing or living in an older property is the question of major maintenance. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REWIRE A HOUSE?​ The answer is not as straightforward as you might expect but generally speaking, rewiring may be necessary every 25-30 years possibly longer. There are some exceptions to this and if you are considering purchasing a home, a wiring system that is older than this is not necessarily in need of rewiring. ​ Let me elaborate....

​OCPD in electrical terminology stands for Overcurrent Protection Device or Overcurrent Protective Device. The main purpose of an OCPD is to prevent an electrical cable from exceeding the electrical current it can safely carry according to its installation method and any installation factors that have been applied. Where there are branch circuits off a main circuit there is often a supplementary OCPD to protect that particular branch.

An RCBO is a type of protective device or 'trip switch'. It protects against overload (excessive use of electrical equipment), overcurrent (excessive current from electrical faults) and earth faults. RCBO stands for Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent.

Electrical overload is a situation where more electrical current is flowing in a circuit than the electrical designer intended. Each electrical circuit is designed and installed to cope with a maximum permanent load and occasional overload. Where continuous overloading occurs, this is beyond the original design constraints of the circuit and needs to be addressed.

In our homes, there is often wiring that is no longer required. This could be for fixed electrical appliances that are no longer in use, have been removed, or where plug sockets have been relocated. UNUSED ELECTRICAL WIRES​ may also come from old electrical components that are outdated or no longer functioning.

When an electric kettle goes faulty, there can be other issues that occur such as a circuit breaker, GFCI or RCD tripping, blow fuses in the panel or fuse box and if there is a fuse in the plug (UK plugs) this can blow also. If the plug is not fused then it is likely that the GFCI or RCD breaker will trip first.
